World Cup and Urban Decay
Sunday 13 September 2009 There's a sewerage processing plant that pumps crap into the sea in front of some of the best urban waves in Cape Town, well some say so anyway.
But the sea wall is crumbling, the water is filthy, the locals are superterritorial and the old buildings are being torndown to knock up luxury flats close to the 2010 football stadium, beingbuilt on the field behind.
The waves here are big and heavy and the reefs are covered in shipwrecks. There are no showers or taps to rinse off after a surf, but the flats across the street sell for millions.
This is the place where I grew up. Some would have it no other way.
