The contest will see three South Africans in the mix, with two times event champion Jordy Smith being joined by JBU Supertrial wildcard winner Dale Staples, as well as the recent WSL – appointed wildcard Mikey February.

Last year’s winner Mick Fanning (AUS), two times event champion Joel Parkinson (AUS), eleven times world champion Kelly Slater (USA) and current world champion John John Florence (HAW) are all here, along with the Brazilian A-Team contingent of Gabriel Medina (BRA), Adriano De Souza (BRA) and Filipe Toledo (BRA) and the current Jeep Leaderboard number one ranked surfer Matt Wilkinson (AUS).

The forecast for the early days in the waiting period looks marginal, but the call will be made every morning depending on what Supertubes deliver. Looks like some small waves on Saturday, up to 3' and then some pretty contestable 4-5' surf set for Sunday and Monday.

The contest venue is a 300-meter long right-hander, and is considered by many to be the best performance right-hand point-break in the world. The wave does have a personality all of her own, and no matter what the forecasts look like, it is imperative to judge the conditions on each day before making a call. The competition has a live webcast.

This Sunday 16 July will see the Cold Water Swim Classic take place at Marina Martinique. Swimmers can experience the thrill and challenge of swimming a triple mile in sub 15-degree water where swimmers wear one Speedo type costume, goggles and a standard silicone swim cap (English Channel swimming rules apply).

For the faint hearted who perhaps are just looking for something to keep them busy through winter or want to give cold water swimming a try without going to extremes, there is a one mile and double mile swim where swimmers may wear wetsuits if they chose to.

Only pre-entries will be accepted for the Cold Water Classic. For safety and planning reasons, no late entries will be accepted after close of entry on Friday 14th July 2017. Minimum age’s on race day apply as follows – 1 Mile (9 years), 2 Mile (12 years). For the 3 Mile, swimmers have to be 14 years or older in the year of the event.
