The concept was first mooted between Spike from Wavescape and Jeremy Walker 12 years ago at the Vintners Surf Classic, an annual get-together of wine makers from the Boland and Western Cape region.

Walker, who is known for making boutique upper-end vintages, said the red was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that had been matured in French oak barrels. It was a 2009 vintage, and had been listed in Platter’s wine guide as a 3.5 star.

Barrels are important to winemakers and surfersThe names would of course be recognised by surfers who enjoy wine. “Barrels are obviously important to both winemakers and surfers, so the Red Barrel was quite a fun play on that, he said. “It’s a smooth elegant wine that brings this a unique fusion to life. It’s also bottled with a screwcap for quality and convenience.” The White Curl emulated the crest of a breaking wave. It was “a crisp blend of Chenin and Sauvignon”, he said.

Wavescape Wines can be ordered direct from Grangehurst, and is being offered at select coastal restaurants, particularly those near surf spots. The Red Barrel, which would retail in shops for R120 or more if it was sold there, which it is not, sells for R85 a bottle, and the white for R45. To order, call Grangehurst 021 855-3625 or email them for more info.
