Wavescape Fish Fry!
Friday 22 November 2013 One week to go before the first Wavescape Fish Fry, presented by WWF-SASSI, where we unite ocean conservation, celebrity cooks and the surfing community with a used surfboard market, sustainable fish braai and DJ Cath from 5fm.

The unique combination of surfboard fish and real fish comes from a collaboration between the Wavescape Surf Festival, WWF-SASSI and the reality TV series Ultimate Braai Master in a day of entertainment in the historical heart of surfing in South Africa, Muizenberg.
Surfers are invited to the used surfboard market in the afternoon, where they can bring up to three boards including any twin-fin fishes they might have to trade or sell. Crafted surfboard brands such as Ferral (Anton Butler) York (Craig Paul), WaWa (Cobus Joubert) and Burnett wooden surfboards (Patrick Burnett) and Dave Stubbs will be there, as well as One Love Studio, who will be decorating surfboards with art.
The market will be followed by a fierce showdown in a fish “braai-off” between runners up of Season 1 Rust and Dust, who square off against Smoke, Sweat & Tears, who sadly have just been booted off the show in Season 2. The teams will use sustainable fish on the WWF-SASSI green list to create a three course dinner for six surfers, who will win their seat at the judging table on the day via a raffle.
The Fish Fry forms part of the Wavescape Surf Festival, presented by Pick n Pay, and includes fun edutainment events for the kids by the Save our Seas Foundation; Jack Black Beer and other craft brews, a glacéau vitaminwater bar; food stalls, surf artists and local surfboard craft demonstrations, followed by music by DJ Oscar from Masi and headlined by DJ Catherine Grenfell from 5FM.
Janine Basson, Manager of WWF-SASSI, said: “Living in harmony with nature is our vision and braaing is part of our culture. So bringing the two together presents a wonderful and inspirational opportunity to celebrate both!”
Proceeds of the Fish Fry go to the Isiqalo Foundation’s Waves for Change programme, which uses surfing as an educational tool for disadvantaged communities.
The Ultimate Braai Master teams are preparing for the showdown, and there are rumours that a Twitter war is about to erupt between @SmokeSweatTears and @RustnDustCT over their chances in the #FishFryCT by @WWFSASSI and @WavescapeSA.
The inaugural Fish Fry takes place in the Blue Bird Garage, Muizenberg, from 3pm on Saturday 30th November. Bring your spare boards to swap or sell (ten percent commission will be charged on all board sales). Entrance is free until 6pm, and R30 at the door for the evening entertainment.

More about the Festival
Wavescape hosts an outdoor screening on Clifton 4th Beach, "the most beautiful cinema on earth" on 7 December, followed by indoor screenings at the Labia Cinema, Cape Town, and Brass Bell, Kalk Bay.
Wavescape Slide Night moves to the Two Oceans Aquarium on Wednesday, 11 December for an evening of 10 minute presentations by 10 ocean thought leaders with an intimate connection to the ocean. Included this year are radio personality Deon Bing, shark scientist Alison Kock, Mike Markovina from Who Moved my Sushi, and veteran white shark expedition leader and photographer Chris Fallows.
“The Wavescape Surf Festival was born of a love of surfing and surf culture, and the simple idea of sharing these good feelings with an audience. Ten years on, we present a range of film, music and art events in South Africa, Reunion & New York, all with the aim of having fun, building community and promoting conservation.”
The Wavescape Surf Festival runs in Durban in July, and Cape Town in December. Our presenting sponsor in 2013 is Pick n Pay, and supporting sponsors are the Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF), WWF’s Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI), Jack Black Beer, and glacéau vitaminwater.
