The Gateway Canal at the V&A Waterfront will be transformed into an extreme sporting paradise with death-defying stunts and dare-devil twists performed by the kings and queens of extreme BMX, FMX, skate and wake boarding in South Africa.

The event, in its third year expects over 5000 extreme sports-loving spectators to attend the day-long festival in the Mother City. Gates open at 11am and close at 7pm, followed by an extreme concert at Zula Lounge in Long Street with top local DJ’s and bands playing into the night.
“Ultimate X is recognised as the elite platform for South African action sport athletes. We are hoping this event will inspire more young South Africans to take up action sports, whether BMX, FMX, skating or wake-boarding. Although the international arena has a longer history of extreme sports, South Africa has a lot of talented youngsters who have the potential to make our country synonymous with world-class action sport,” said Markus Museler of Old School Productions, South Africa’s leading extreme sports company and founder of Ultimate X.
Watch international competitors in action like Nick de Wit (FMX), Greg Illingworth (BMX) and Moses Adams (Skate) plus extreme stars like Brendan Potter and Dallan Goldman on FMX; Colin and Stuart Louden on BMX; skaters Dlamini Dlamini and Justus Kotze; and wakeboarding extremists Devon Nassif and Nick Burton-Moore.

Mike Silver, of experiential marketing partner Stretch, said that this year’s festival would be bigger and better.
“The adrenalin-fuelled spectators can expect to experience top international and local athletes competing on some of the largest ride infrastructure ever seen in South Africa; lifestyle stalls; live radio broadcast; and top South African brands like Absa Life Xtreme, DC and Fox at the ultimate outdoor venue in Cape Town with views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean,” said Silver, of Stretch, who together with Old School Productions, conceptualised and executed the festival since it kicked off three years ago.

23 of the country’s best riders in each discipline will compete for a piece the R80 000 in cash prizes and the title of ABSA Ultimate X Gold 2012 South African champion.
Top South African bands and DJ’s plus a full bar service is available all day to keep guests hydrated, hyped and entertained. Also, as part of ABSA’s efforts to take action sports to the masses, the sponsor will be staging an extreme experience for revellers on the day. Spectators can relax on the two 25m decks by the canal that feature day-beds, bean bags, cocktail tables and sofa’s all under a huge shaded tent. Xbox 360 games will also be made available for the public to enjoy.
“With the success of Ultimate X last year, Absa Life is thrilled to once again have the opportunity to stage South Africa’s largest extreme sports lifestyle event. Last year, the event attracted extreme sporting enthusiasts from across the country and we expect that we will exceed those attendance numbers in 2012. Our venue at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town has been set up to comfortably accommodate participants and mainstream audiences who wish to take a glimpse of this adrenalin pumping sport.

Absa Life identifies with the youth market and their want for excitement. Through our research we found that there was a gap in the market to provide adequate solutions that cater specifically for this market. We developed Absa Life Xtreme to provide a series of extended covers that meet the requirements of people whose lives are driven by adrenalin pumping activities,” said Jannie Venter, Managing Executive at Absa Life.
