Untrashing the Kom

Monday 29 September 2014 Last weekend the people of Kommetjie collectively removed 500kg, or half a ton, of garbage and plastic detritus from Long Beach, taking them only three hours. Dougal Patterson was there.

On a perfect, sunny, spring day on the south side of the Cape Peninsula, kids, grandparents, moms and dads, groms, bigwave legends, small wave chop-hoppers, barrel donkeys and shoulder chargers were all out in force, combing the beaches around Long Beach, collecting and bagging the flotsam and jetsam of our consumerist culture.

Jock Currie (a local PHD Zoologist ) lead the charge ... from the gnarliest part of the local river where he spent the entire time knee deep in plastic chip packets and swamp muck.

One smooth talker even got his mother-in-law from Joburg to pick up a few bags of trash. The cleanup was part of a Kommetjie community initiative called "7".

The 7 represents the dream of families collaborating on projects that help to make the world a safer, kinder, cleaner and less lonely place. Look out for upcoming events and projects.
