Under Construction
Tuesday 11 January 2011 from a press release Cape Town bodyboarders have taken the plunge and have placed grass roots development under construction. On Saturday, the Western Province Bodyboarding Association (WPBA) hosted the first of their development clinics for the 2010/2011 season. Nineteen excited children from Kleinberg Primary School in Ocean View were picked up and taken to Long Beach, Kommetjie to try out some body boarding moves.
The children ranged from between the ages of 10 and 14 and most of them had very little, if any experience in the ocean apart from fishing.
Despite a near gale force South Easter, cold Atlantic water and the little experience the children had, they loved the time spent catching waves and developing their skills on a bodyboard. Some of them showed natural talent and potential and if provided with the opportunity, could develop their skills enough to make it something they could do on their own as a healthy recreational sport.
WPBA's aim for development this coming year is to focus on a core group of children and help them progress to the point where they are able to compete in the Development division that is being re-incorporated into both Western Province Trails, and at National Championships.
The children expressed their enjoyment of the clinic and how they can't wait to get back into the water again. WPBA looks forward to the next development clinic which will be held at the end of January. Special Thanks goes out to Rodgers Fruiterers for sponsoring fruit for the clinic, and to Mr. Jacobs and Mr. George from Kleinberg Primary for their support and organization.
