Twiggy Would Go

Thurs 1 November 2012 Grant Twiggy Baker has been invited to surf in the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave surfing event in Hawaii. The window period of the prestigious event on Oahu's North Shore opens on December and runs until the end of February.

Twiggy dropped the news on his Facebook wall with a photograph of his invitation, saying "The best e-mail a surfer could ever receive? You are invited to the Eddie!"

Dane Patterson, marketing manager of Quiksilver SA, said Twiggy was invited to the Eddie last year, but it didn't run. "The organisers always re-assess the field and send out new invitations the next year," he said.

The event window period runs from December 1 to February 28 this winter season. The pay-off line "The bay calls the day" only kicks in when the waves are 20 feet and bigger. The defining moment in the decision depends on whether organisers, made of a collective of surfing luminaries and Hawaiian heavyweights in the big wave surfing brotherhood, believe "Eddie would go".

Eddie Aikau was the first official lifeguard at Waimea Bay, and is revered as the father of big wave surfing. Follow the event on Twitter using the hashtag #eddiewouldgo
