The Kalk Pops!

Saturday 28 September 2013 A cranking groundswell has swept into False Bay for the Kalk Bay Shootout 2013, just as the entire East Coast lit up with a giant 20ft+ storm swell Words Cyle Myers. PhotosMarishka Diebold

The green light was called early this morning, with solid 4-5' lines coming through, and a few maybe bigger.

The highest single wave score (8.50) went to Deen Hill. He took off late, dropped to the bottom, just managed to scoop before the lip hit him and proceeded to ride the foam ball through second reef and snuck out just before the wave pinched.

The most eventful heat saw Dassie, Craig johnson, and Chris Bond battle it out. Dassie took off on arguably one of the biggest waves of the day, stuck the drop and got barreled all the way down through second reef as the wave peeled off for a wave score of 7.5.

Waves are super fun right now, with the double up/set waves are round and open while the smaller ones offer open canvas's upon which you can gain some points through airs and turns.

Each competitor received a Hemporium t-shirt upon entrance and a Red Bull.

We had a quick interview with Chris Bond:

You're a big guy (6'2) and you choose to ride a small board (5'11) out there, what where your thoughts behind that?

The previous heat, there were very few barrels and more waves for turns, so I opted to take my smaller board out there to maybe bust some airs and do some turns, but then i saw Dassie get a massive standup barrel and thought perhaps I need a bigger board

Then the shark alarm sounded and you came in and swapped equipment?

That's right, I used the shark alarm to go in quick and change my board, grabbed a slightly bigger one to get in a little earlier

I see you riding a Hurley wetsuit, there are not too many of those around how do they feel?

They're sick, Josh Salie had a bright neon green 3/2 and had to keep active, while I thought I'd sit tight, warm and cosy and be patient for the bigger ones in my 4/3 (laughs)...

Here are the heat heat winners and quarter finalists thus far. (Heat winners go straight into the quarter finals, 2nd and 3rd get knocked straight out.)
