The Flying Fynn
Sunday 27 October 2013 He rules Pipe but gets no attention, apart from getting ragged by his mate John John for naming moves after himself. Craig Jarvis speaks to Flynn Novak, the master of surfing’s hardest move.

Flynn. Last time we spoke you had just won a nice 50 clips for the best air ever. We have seen you totally rule at Pipe and we once witnessed a video clip you land one of surfing's hardest moves, yet you don't have surfing's highest profile. What’s up with that? Why isn’t Flynn massive?
Well, I do have the height of a Viking, and to be honest I've never really had a sponsor that took the time to market me.
It’s outrageous! You are the Flynnstone Flip! Do you ever feel a bit neglected by the surf media? Does this make you sad?
I'm thankful for the photos that have been published, and the covers I have had. Most recently I worked with Aaron Checkwood on a project called "Life on Mars" for Transworld. I was pretty stoked on that.
Otherwise, how’s life been treating you on the North Shore?
Epic! I love being home! I have a good routine to stay fit, healthy, happy, and balanced.

To be frank, you’ve been fairly quiet since your win in 2010. What else have you been up to? Are you still a pro surfer or are you doing anything else for a living?
I'm still surfing professionally, competing in all of the Hawaii events, but mainly freesurfing and coming up with good content for video and photos. I also have been getting into some art here and there. I stay pretty busy, and recently started working with Under Armor, which I've been really happy about. I also started my own company with two other close friends called CHANCE'EM where we've created and have been funding the North Shore High School surf teams for the past 4 years now. We raise money through fundraising and selling product (t-shirts and hats) to provide the North Shore High Schools with a surf team, as well as give back to the community.
Good to hear! It’s great to give something back isn’t it? Any new moves in the making?
Well, Flynnovation is always in the making ... haha shout out to Chippa Wilson! Watch out for the "InFlynnity" Double backflip. I heard Chippa's working on a move called "the Chippendale" – it’s a double-grab, but I don't know if it’s in the water?

What bums you out the most in surfing?
The surf industry is twisted.
Similarly, what stokes you the most?
I love surfing with good friends when no one else is around, seeing hard work pay off, and going tandem with my girlfriend is also rewarding.
What is the future of surfing?
Two words: Male Models
Heard it here first. Where’s your favorite wave?
Pipeline
Do you ever leave the North Shore?
Not any more. I've traveled so much, I'm stoked to be home right now getting ready for the winter and I have a girlfriend and she has a dog and we cruise.
