Saturday the 15th of November saw the 2nd Annual Kommetjie Boardswop run in the community hall in the seaside town of Kommetjie to the south of Cape Town.

The venue was swamped with psyched groms, long toothed chargers, moms, grannies, dogs, babies, donkeys, four elephants, 27 unicorns and a beached whale. People from all over the peninsula showed up with boards to swop / sell or trade.

Classic old skool surf movies looped whilst the surfer minstrels jammed and kids got shacked in tarp-barrels on the tennis court. The cause was a good one. Our home town hero had decided to chase his dream of making it onto the world big wave tour.

400 people showed up and threw their coins into the metaphorical wishing well and wished for Mike Schlebach's dream to come true. The event sponsors went baboon and threw a huge pile of merchandise at the organisers.

It took almost a full hour just to raffle off the prizes. When everything was said and done we sent Mike home with a yogurt tub overflowing with cash.

The board swop is a 7 community initiative. 7 represents the dream of working 7 days a week to make the world a kinder, cleaner, more inspiring and less lonely place. 7 is also the first number of the Kommetjie dialing code.

Next event is the “Kommetjie-retro” that is planned to mark the end of summer.
