Team SA Announced
Thursday 19 May 2011 Surfing South Africa, the country's administrator for surfing, has announced the team to compete in the 2011 International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games in Playa Venao, Panama from June 25 to July 2, according to a press release.
The 2011 national team comprises four men, two women, two longboarders, two coaches and a manager.
The top seed in the Men's division is 2009 SA champion Gavin Roberts of Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal. Second seed is 2010 SA team reserve Llewellyn Whittaker of Southern Cape with former SA junior team captain Matthew Bromley of Western Province the third seed. Klee Strachan of Southern KZN, a member of the SA Team in Portugal in 2008, is the fourth member of the Men’s group. Khayehihle Ncgobo of Southern KZN is the non travelling reserve.
Recently crowned SA Champion Nikita Robb of Border, who competed on the ASP Women’s World Tour last year, heads the women's team. She is joined by last year's Under 20 girl’s champion and former SA junior team member Tanika Hoffman of Western Province.
Justin Bing, 2009 SA Team member, and fellow Western Province longboarder Matthew Moir, two time ISA world longboard champion and multiple national champion, will compete in Panama. Thomas King, also of Western Province, is the official reserve.
Isaac February of Western Province has been appointed manager and the coaches are David Malherbe of Border and Etienne Venter of Eastern Province.
The International Surfing Association has appointed Cyril Nel of East London as one of the head judges for the event and Johno Hutchison of Ballito is included on the international judging panel.
The South African Team's preparations, training and attendance at the ISA World Surfing Games has been supported by a R100,000 grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) and a grant from Sport and Recreation South Africa.
Surfing South Africa is recognised by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and the International Surfing Association (ISA) as the official governing body for the sport of surf riding in South Africa.
Six provincial organisations and three national associations are affiliated to Surfing South Africa which coordinates and manages all aspects of surf riding from grass roots level through to the selection of National teams.
