Swell Fest

The Jeffreys Bay Open of Surfing, presented by Billabong, runs next week and forms the flagship event of the Winter Festival, a unique multi-sport event that begins its first year.

Spike from Wavescape says that the swell looks small for the window period after the current cooking east swell begins to fade. However, a steady trickle of swell should keep the contestants keenly glued to the charts.

Mark Occhilupo is on his way to surf the fabled lines of Supertubes with another, er ... slightly older, ballie called Gavin Rudolph.

Rudolph, one of the country's surfing pioneers, is a veteran at 60 years old, but can kick up some serious spray with the best of them. And they are the best around. Included in the event are Sean Holmes, Greg Emslie, Occy, Ryan Payne, Richard Edy, Dale Staples, Shane Thorne, Warren Dean and Frankie Oberholzer

As you can see from the above guys (full list below), it's an enthralling mixture of youth and experience. The event includes the Jeffreys Bay Cold Water Swim Classic 2013, which took place at Marina Martinique today, a catch and release fishing event (today) as well as a trail run, mountain bike event and skateboarding.

An exciting sideline to surfing is the FFFF Friction Free Session, a demonstration of surfing without fins, orchestrated by the leading exponent in this discipline Derek Hynd. While this form of surfing is challenging and hard to master, Hynd has developed his Friction Free skills on the waves of Supertubes over the last few seasons and will lead this demonstration.

Derek will be joined by a few hand-picked local surfers and possibly a few international guests.

SWIMMING RESULTS

Kevin Grey took 1st place in the 12.5deg 7.5km swim at the Marina Martinique this morning. PJ Duffrey came 2nd with Richard Jute in 3rd Place.
