While one gathering was to Protect the West Coast, the other - or others as in protests around the country - was to Protect the East Coast, two very different, but equally important areas of natural beauty and bio-diversity.

The PTWC film - a powerfully emotive piece of filmmaking produced by Fly on the Wall Productions - sheds light on the destructive mining practices on the West Coast of South Africa and its impact on local communities and the environment. The premiere, which was hosted by Gone. at Jack Black's Taproom, held a Q&A with the film contributors and Protect The West Coast's CEO, Mike Schlebach.

There was also a photo slideshow and Q&A with Damien Schumann and Dom de Jesus about their Run West project, which entails gruelling long distance trail running segments along the West Coast to raise awareness of the mining and raise funds for PTWC. A highlight of the film is the amazing song by Zolani Mahola.

A second screening has been arranged due to strong demand. This takes place Wednesday at the Shred skatepark in Paarden Eiland at 6pm. All ticket proceeds to to PTWC and each ticket includes entrance to skate the bowl and mini ramp before the screening at 8pm. Tickets here.

Thousands of South Africans have signed a petition against Shell conducting the seismic survey that threatens under-researched damage and anguish to sea life, including death and hearing loss, as well as disturbing essential behaviors like feeding and breeding.

The ship Amazon Warrior from Shearwater GeoServices docked in Cape Town not 12 hours after the PTWC film premiered, with hundreds of protesters there to 'unwelcome' it. The vessel is due to cover a 6,000km2 area from 20km off the East Coast between Morgan's Bay and Port St Johns in water depths of 700m to 3000m dragging behind it 48 air guns that will fire loud shock-waves at the sea floor every 10 seconds for up to five months.

Tomorrow, those attending the screening of Over the Edge at the Bluebird Garage in Muizenberg, the stomach-churning big wave documentary that follows the exploits of local hero Matt Bromley as he surfs giant waves around the world, notably Jaws and Nias, will network and discuss the seismic survey and the opposition to it.

Doors open at 6pm, and the screening starts at 7pm. A Q&A will be held with Matt Bromley after the film, as well as brief talks by the hosts: ocean sustainability champions Oceaneers, with Wavescape and five other ocean-infused brands. Tickets include a Jack Black beer. Get them here
