Quiksilver Surf Day
Good Friday 22 April 2011 New Pier, Durban – Twenty surfers from various backgrounds congregated at Durban’s New Pier today to take part in a fun tag team event organized by Quiksilver as a prelude to the annual Quiksilver Pro Junior which kicks off today.

12 surfers from the Umthombo Street Children organisaton were teamed up with various professional surfers, some of who will be participating in tomorrow’s event. The children were treated to Quiksilver t-shirts, rash vests and caps as well cold drinks and lunch. Four teams of five took to the water for an hour and it was Stanley Badger’s (Cape St. Francis) team that took the honours, his team included Kyle Lane (Umhlanga) and three of the Umthombo surfers. “It was great to see the kids from Umthombo interacting and enjoying the day with some of the top surfers, some of the guys showed some real talent. The ocean and surfing is a great way for them to channel their energy and it was good to see how excited these kids get when they go surfing,’ said Quiksilver marketing manager Dane Patterson.
The Quiksilver Pro Junior and King of the Groms kicks off tomorrow at 8:00am at New Pier. The event boasts over R100 000 in prize money and has attracted 80 of South Africa’s best junior surfers under the age of twenty. Finals for the four divisions will take place on Sunday starting at 13:00.
