It was a legendary night at Jack Black's Taproom last Saturday when about 240 pulled in to watch the premeire of The Story of Tony Alva, the seminal tale of perhaps skateboarding's main pioneer, and certainly the dude accredited with starting the aerial.
The evening warmed up with the eclectic beats of Diamond Thug before the screenings, followed by the sounds of The Dinosaurs afterwards to keep the party going. Before the films, which included the classic Mikey February short Nu Rhythmo, Warren Talbot of Vans had the crowd cheering when he presented Nigel Savel of 9Miles Project with a donation for 20 grand.
Savel was over the moon, saying that the money "would go towards our Clubhouse Project in Elands Bay in procuring containers and converting them". His 9Miles Project has expanded to include Elands Bay, spreading the love from False Bay.
The next event in the month-long lineup of ocean-conscious items is OCEANS ALIVE, an evening of surf, ocean and activism in collaboration with Gone, Patagonia, Mike Schlebach and Sealand Gear, Two Oceans Aquarium, Sea Change Project, Wildoceans, and Frank Solomon’s Sentinel Ocean Alliance. We host a panel discussion on the many ocean challenges facing Cape Town in recent times, and screen two short films, along with presentations and a panel discussion.

A record 30 surf and ocean films retain surfing documentaries and films remain the core of the festival. Wavescape is screening big-name surfing documentaries, including Trouble: The Lisa Andersen Story; Andy Irons: Kissed by God and Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable.
A two-day mini film festival is being screened at Scarborough to cater for the Deep South community. Venue is Camel Rock restaurant this Thursday and Friday. Join us for two evenings of epic surf films, beers and good vibes in the Deep South!
R60 gets you entrance and a free Jack Black beer and you can win Vans swag giveaways.
