Ncgobo got the result ahead of Avuyile Ndamase (East London), Nicky Njapha (Umzumbe) and Brandon Benjamon (Cape Town). Solid performances were put in by all eight Future Star surfers who were selected by Surfing South Africa’s transformation program that grooms young, talented surfers from all over South Africa.

Standouts in other heats on Friday were Max Armstrong (Cape Town), Shane Sykes (Salt Rock, KZN) and Jason Harris (Scottburgh) who all advanced into the next rounds of the Quiksilver King of the Groms under sixteen division.

The event also caters for Pro Junior under twenty surfers as well as King of the Groms under fourteen and under twelve surfers. Seeded under twenty surfers will be taking to the water today (Saturday) with the finals and awards ceremony held on Sunday.

The event’s only female surfer, Sarah Baum (Warner Beach), will be taking on the boys in the Pro Junior division. Baum is looking sharp after spending time in Australia competing on the ladies world tour and will be looking to dent some ego’s as she did in the 2011 event.

The event boasts R65 000 in prize money as well as an air ticket to France for the under sixteen winner where he will compete in the Quiksilver King of the Groms international finals in September. The Pro Junior winner will walk away with R15 000 in prize money. Surfing gets underway at 8:00am and concludes at 4:00pm.

The Quiksilver Pro Junior & King of the Groms is presented by the City of Durban and supporting sponsors include Independent On Saturday, Skullcandy and Nestle Pure Life Water. The event is sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals and Surfing South Africa, surfers will be powered by Red Bull.
