Three Through
Tuesday 27 October 2014 Three Saffas are through to Round 3 of the Allianz ASP World Junior Championships: Slade Prestwich, Benji Brand and Dylan Lightfoot, all looking good in clean 4-5' lines at Portugeuse point Ribeira D’Ilhash.

Facing elimination, surfers stepped up to the plate and brought their A-game to keep their Portuguese campaign alive towards the ultimate junior crown.
Earlier, Brand and Lightfoot had both won their Rd 1 heats emphaticaly, moving straight into Rd 3. Jordy Maree got 3rd in Rd 1 and had another chance in Round 2, but was eliminated yesterday. Matt Mcgillivray got a 2nd in Rd 1, also placing him in the tricky knockout round yesterday.
The same went for Slade Prestwich, Joshe Faulkner and Diran Zakarian, who all contested Rd 2 yesterday. Only Prestwich survived. He joins Brand and Lightfoot in Rd 3.
Noe Mar McGonagle (CRI) 18, talented regular-footer hailing from the iconic Pavones in Costa Rica, nailed the highest score of the event so far, a near-perfect 9.57 for a succession of big arching turns on the outside section of the wave, before pulling in a little inside barrel on his way in.

“It was just an incredible wave,” Mcgonagle said. “The outside was really fun and had a couple carves and snaps, and on the inside I got a little barrel.. This place is incredible, especially at low tide, and I’m super happy to advance and get a good heat under my belt !”
Kanoa Igarashi (USA) 17, refocused overnight and came alive in his round 2 matchup against Matthew McGillivray (ZAF) to post a solid 16.10 heat total and advance into the third round. The Californian phenom displayed multiple variations of his top turns game and freed his fins on occasion to please the judges panel
Joshua Moniz (HAW) 18, had come out firing on Day 1 and dominated the first heat of the men’s competition. The talented Hawaiian unleashed powerful gauges on his forehand and punctuated his best ride with a radical layback snap to collect a 9.00 point ride and the win.
This place is sick, it’s one of my favourite places I ever been to, food is good and there are crazy slabs everywhere so it’s been super fun.
“I was pretty happy with the waves, I pulled up this morning a little late and then I saw just perfect lines, so I was stoked to get a couple,” Moniz said. “It’s a lot like back home (Sunset), pretty tricky, you wanna keep going deep, hang wide and get those big open face waves that are a lot easier and smoother and allow you to do bigger carves. I’d be stoked to get a bit further, this is my last year in the World Juniors so I'm pretty psyched to get better than Round 4. This place is sick, it’s one of my favourite places I ever been to, food is good and there are crazy slabs everywhere so it’s been super fun.”
The Allianz ASP World Junior Championships is scheduled from October 25 - November 2, 2014 in playa de Ribeira d’Ilhas, Ericeira / PORTUGAL.
