Mick Fanning Parody
Friday 23 October 2015 A KFC ad copying the memes that surfaced after Mick Fanning's shark scare has pissed off Fanning's mum, and there are reports that the WSL might be preparing to sue KFC South Africa.

The chicken food chain, playing on many memes that flooded the Interweb after the scare, created a parody of the attack (depicting our very own big wave surfer James Taylor playing the part of Fanning). Complete with WSL logos, blue heat vest and re-enacted splashing, the payoff line at the end of the ad says: ‘next level awesome’ after the Fanning character has lifted and held the white shark above him with one arm to mimic the tandem surfing 'swan' move.
Funny that, because James and his partner actually won the tandem surfing event held at the Earthwave Festival in Cape Town in 2013!
It's obviously aimed at millennials or those barely older, complete with a slapstick, kid-like dose of testosterone-charged drama. It's quite funny, but not for Elizabeth Osborne, or apparently the WSL.
A story on the Sydney Morning Herald a few days ago said she was upset that the near-death experience of her son had been "appropriated by KFC South Africa to flog the fast-food chain's new burger, the 'Jacked Up Double Crunch'."
"First of all, I don't know how it sells chicken. I think its disperectful to Mick, but also to every person and family who have either been attacked by a shark or have fatalities. because it brings back the trauma," she said in an interview with the newspaper.
The article claims that the WSL is preparing legal action to force KFC to take it off the air, but the WSL has declined to comment.
