Mami Wata Winners
Thursday 27 September 2017 The first round of the Mami Wata Wavescape #surfafrica photo contest are out and here are the winners, as judged from more than 60 entries by our first judge Greg Ewing.

GRIER FISHER: BREAKFAST IS SERVED
Thanks to everyone who entered. There were over 60 entries and loads of magic shots. Round 1 judge Greg Ewing was only allowed to choose three! For him, the shots that best answered the brief of capturing ‘surf adventure in Africa’, and therefore the winners of R2,000 hampers of Mami Wata gear and Striped Horse beer, are ‘Solitude’ by Ant Fox, ‘Exploring in the Champ’ by Daniel Grebe, and ‘Breakfast is served’ by Grier Fisher.
These three go through to the finals where they have a chance to win a custom-made Mami Wata X Hugh Thompson surfboard. The winners will be judged and announced during the Wavescape Festival in Cape Town in early December.

ANT FOX: Solitude
Round 2 opened on the 16th Sept and will be judged by Alan van Geysen. If you entered Round 1, please email us at help@mamiwata.surf and we’ll hatch a plan to get a Mami Wata tee to you to say thanks for entering.
For rounds 2 and 3, we’re looking for the photos that best capture the unique experience of surfing in Africa. The road trips, the freedom, the friends, the nature, the adventure and the waves. The photo could be from a recent trip, or you could raid the archive and dig up African surf gold from the past.
A photo of that J-bay road trip in 1975, Namibia in 2003 or Morocco in 2017. Have a look at our Instagram feed @mamiwatasurf to get a flavor for what we are looking for. The criteria for the shots is that they show the essence of surf adventure anywhere in Africa.

DANIEL GREBE: Exploring in the Champ
The overall winner of the competition will win a Mami Wata X Hugh Thompson board worth up to R10,000 as well as a photo workshop with one of the world renowned judges. There are also lots of hampers of Mami Wata gear and Striped Horse beer to be won!
To enter you simply need to post the picture to Instagram or Facebook with #surfafrica + tag @mamiwatasurf @WavescapeSA. Don’t forget to geotag the image. You can only enter pictures in one round, but welcome to enter new images in other rounds.
There are three rounds and thus three chances to win. Each round will be judged by one of Africa’s finest surf photographers – Alan van Gysen, Greg Ewing or Sacha Specker.
