Magna Move
Thursday 21 May 2015 For the first time in recent years, the Billabong Juniors move to Magnas, the least known JBay break in the midst of famous spots that draw attention away from her. Craig Jarvis explains.

In the middle of the JBay Open World Surf League event, there is a new contest in town. It’s the opening contest in the Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS, and for the first time in recent years there will be a serious event, taking place at Magnatubes.
Up the beach from Supertubes, and around the corner from Boneyards, Magnatubes is a wave that often gets overlooked due to firing waves all around her. Supers gets the big crowds while Point gets her fair share. Salads and Impossibles get their regulars, while Boneyards has strict crowd control. In the background, Magnatubes can often be found grinding away with no one out. A fun right-hander that can run for ages, with good rippable sections and the odd tube thrown in. There is also the becahbreak, which sometimes gets a great little sand bank on the right conditions.

There will also be an international contingent participating in the event, with a crew of young Billabong surfers, in the country for the Billabong Bloodlines, entered into the Billabong Junior Series event. The following international surfers are all frothing for this junior event, and for most of them it will be their first trip to South Africa: Ethan Ewing (Australia), Griffin Colapinto (USA), Seth Moniz (Hawai), Shaun Manners (Australia), Eithan Osborne (USA) and Liam O'Brien (Australia).
The Billabong junior Series presented by BOS event 1 falls under the JBay Winterfest. The JBay Winterfest is a multi-discipline event, with a number of exciting sports and events taking place in JBay over the two weeks. Events include mountain biking, an extreme trail running event, the Oakley X-Over celebrity cross over event, a downhill skate event, a kite festival, a fishing tournament, the Cold Water Classic open water swim, the sokkie jol skate event and the music festival. Acts include Jack Parow, Taxi Violence and headline act Matthew Mole

“We’re stoked to be having the first event in the series at Magna Tubes,” said Billabong South Africa Marketing Manager Chad D’Arcy. “It’s in the middle of surf season here, and the junior surfers will be able to watch the best surfers in the world competing just down the beach in-between surfing in our event. It’ll also be a great opportunity for the best juniors in the country to surf against some internationals, which will add to their experience levels.”
The Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS is a three -day tournament, and it has a waiting period from 13-17 July. Surfers will be able to enter the event a month before on www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za
It is the start of the two-series Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS, with the second an final event taking place at Seal Point in late September.
