Lock Him Up - Aussies

Monday 21 February 2011 The Internet ran hot today about an incident that saw Sunny Garcia allegedly strangle and severely beat a Burleigh Heads local in the shorebreak at a surf event on Saturday, earning him and Jeremy Flores suspensions for ASP events.

The ASP Rules and Disciplinary Committee suspended Flores from the Burleigh Breaka Pro, which he was surfing in at the time, while Garcia, who had been eliminated, was suspended from the next event on the ASP calendar he was due to attend, the 4-Star Burton Toyota Pro in Newcastle.

In a press release, the ASP said it would "co-operate fully and await the findings of an active police investigation into the matter before reconvening and determining the next course of action". World title contender Flores and world tour surfer Garcia could be in a world of trouble after two people - a local man and a man who filmed the incident - were left bruised and bleeding.

Garcia and Flores made it onto Australian television news last night on several bulletins of Channel Nine after a bystander filmed them (mostly Garcia) punching and strangling a local in the shorebreak to the point where he looks about to drown. Flores said he was merely trying to intervene when the local got into a verbal spat with Garcia's 16-year-old son, Stone, and that the local had thrown the first punch.

"The three headed for shore when Sunny came running down the beach to intercept them. He’s then seen assaulting the surfer in the water." - Surfer Magazine

According to Surfer Magazine, "the three headed for shore when Sunny came running down the beach to intercept them. He’s then seen assaulting the surfer in the water."

"Jeremy and the Garcia family have become close after spending time together this past year in Hawaii and the two are currently residing together on the Gold Coast during the contest," Surfer Magazine said.

According to the news broadcast, which called it a vicious assault, Garcia then assaulted the cameraman, who sustained deep cuts and a suspected broken hand.

Outraged Australians have been laying into Garcia and Flores on Youtube comments, and it hasn't been pretty.

"the ASP claims to have a zero tolerance policy on violence. how many more times do we, the surfing community, have to watch this guy attack people in &? out? of the water before a lifetime ban from competiton is imposed? does he have to beat someone to death in the middle of a contest first?"

"I hope these c*********s come to sydney and me and my mates bump into them? then we'll show these american pooftes how real aussies get down."

"had enough of sunny? garcia? send an email to the ASP and demand a lifetime ban from competition for this giant douchebag."

"when yourve clearly won theres no need to attempt murder what a retard he used to be my favourite surfer just lost my? respect i get protecting your pride 1 punch should be enough."

"cowardly act performed by a man who should've been locked up long ago"

Many other comments were filled with vitriol and spite that can't be repeated. Much of the anger is also directed at the ASP for alleged being too soft on the hardnose approach that has alleged been used by Garcia in the past.
