The two evenings (Join the Event on Facebook) take place at the hospitality Bedouin in the Knysna Pavilion on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 July. Starting at 8pm with half an hour of talks and storytelling by renowned scientists and fish experts, the programme ends with the screening of short and medium length ocean and surfing  films from around the world.

Spike from Wavescape, who will host the evenings, said that the films have been selected to honour the work being done in South Africa to ensure that sustainable fishing practices keep wild stocks stable and the oceans as they are meant to be.

"Some films reflect the pristine and raw beauty of the ocean, from the frozen wildernesses in Alaska to drone footage of surfers riding over translucent coral reefs in Indonesia. Others tell documentary stories about ordinary people who fight to protect the oceans".

Spike joins Janine Basson, the Communications Manager for Pick n Pay, who will introduce the company's longstanding partnership with WWF-SASSI and tell the story of their journey towards selling only sustainable seafood by the end of 2015.

Pavs Pillay, Manager of the SASSI programme at WWF-SA, and John Duncan, Senior Manager of their Marine Programme, will take turns in unveiling the Chef's Story – about how acclaimed Cape Town chef Brad Ball made a stand on what fish he served in his restaurant – as part of their #SASSIStories campaign.

Two local guest speakers will educate the audience about local fishing conditions and practices. Marine biologist Jaco Barendse will speak on "Every angler's dream? Trophy fish in the Garden Route", and Kyle Smith from SANParks will tell his story about challenges facing recreational and subsistence fishers in the area in a talk entitled “If a fisherman could catch fish, how much fish would a fisherman catch?” .

#SASSIStories - So What's Your Story?

Have you considered that as a consumer you have a powerful influence over the products your supermarket or a restaurant sells and serves, especially with regards to sustainable seafood?

WWF South Africa’s (WWF-SA) Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) are inviting their networks of consumers, restaurants, chefs and ambassadors to use their consumer power to drive positive change by participating in a sustainable seafood campaign. This positive change will be inspired by South Africans sharing the #SASSIstories in order to influence the seafood supply chain.

From 5 June 2015, World Environment Day, WWF -SASSI will be empowering and mobilising South African seafood consumers to speak up, and ask their seafood suppliers, retailers, restaurants and fish shops what they are doing about seafood sustainability and if they are playing their part in ensuring healthy oceans.
