Kiteboard Crash

Monday 8 February 2016 British kiteboarder Lewis Crathern was seriously injured after a massive crash in howling southeast winds during the semi-finals of the Red Bull King of the Air at Big Bay in Blouberg yesterday.

The 31-year-old, who had been dominating the event later won by fellow countryman Aaron Hadlow, attempted a massive kite loop at the start of the second semi-final, but his kite stalled and he slammed into the surf on his back after freefalling 15 to 20 metres.

Brazilian kiter Reno Romeu immediately recognised the severity of the situation, and ditched his kite to aid the stricken kiteboarder. The others in the semi-final, Andries Fourie and Jesse Richman, also pitched in to help and the heat was called off.

In pumping southeast near-gale winds, lifeguards and the safety boat battled to get to Crathern, but luckily his fellow contestants ensured he stayed above the surface until they arrived.

According to his mother Sandra Crathern, speaking on Facebook, "he was in a serious accident ... and is in an induced coma. He has no internal injuries, brain damage or broken bones as far as they can see but having problems breathing due to the water inhalation."

She said that she was on her way to South Africa to be with her son and his partner.

His injury came immediately after another heavy crash in the last seconds of the other semi involving Lasse Walker from the Netherlands, who later thanked Kevin Langaree on Facebook for coming to his rescure.

"Doctors say I got some water in my lungs but no serious injuries. Thanks for all the kind messages and support from everyone! Will come back to you guys soon!"
