Jordy Style

Thursday 25 July 2013 Jordy Smith is killing it in the US Open of Surfing. So is Beyrick De Vries and Bianca Buitendag... and then Mr Smith dropped the question to which #shesaidyes. Jarvi spins it for us.

Competing in the Vans US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach in California, Jordy Smith’s performance in the round of 48 of the event was electrifying. In the small and crumbly right-handers, Jordy opened up with 8.17 ride, and the rest of the competitors were trailing from that moment onwards.

Jordy had Hodei Collazo from Basque Country, Dion Atkinson from Australia and Yadin Nicol from Australia in the heat, with the two Australians being eliminated and the Basque surfer advancing along with Smith.

Jordy was surfing fast and on rail, and looking at home in the somewhat difficult Huntington conditions. It was only after the heat that Jordy admitted to riding a brand new board in his heat, something that is quite rare in competition at this level. He finished his heat with a blistering 9.17 ride for a solid right –hander that he picked up off the pier bowl.

“I rode a new board for the first time in that heat and it went well,” Smith said. “I think the trick out there is really just catching waves because there aren’t many of them at the moment. You don’t have to do a whole lot out there to get big scores and just have to look like you’re not fighting the wave. Conditions are really tough and I knew I needed a wider board. It ended up working out.”

Jordy went on to make it the old one-two by proposing to his beautiful lady Lyndall Jarvis after the day’s competition, and very excitedly announcing her acceptance on various social media platforms later on that evening. “Just asked my best friend and love of my life Lyndall Jarvis to be my wife. Best day of my life - #shesaidyes”, he tweeted.

We at www.wavescape.co.za would like to congratulate Jordy and Lyndall on their engagement.

In other good news, Durban’s Beyrick De Vries is also through to the next round after winning his heat comfortably in the round of 48. Beyrick is on a role now, and wants to qualify for the World Championship Tour for 2014. “I tried to get a little warm-up before the heats and it seems to be working,” De Vries said. “I’ve been trying to get in to a routine and not putting pressure on myself and fun seems to be the way to go. At the same time I’m trying to dig deep. I really want it a lot more than last year and feel that my competitive streak inside me has gotten a lot stronger too.” De Vries eliminated Brazilian wonder kid Felipe Toledo as well as Tim Reyes in the process.
