Jordy on Jordy
Wednesday 1 April 2015 An unexceptional 9th at Snapper started the pro season for Jordy Smith but a solid Round 1 win in the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach has him back on track. Craig Jarvis tracked him down in Australia.

New year and a new Jordy. You’re looking relaxed, and at ease with life right now. How are you feeling about the year ahead? Are things going well for you?
Yeah, I feel good, thanks. I’ve been surfing so much lately, and really enjoying it, really enjoying just going surfing. As far as the rest of the year has to offer, I have a feeling that I have great things to experience.
You were looking fast in the tiny surf and your board seemed to be the one, yet you faltered. How do you feel about your 9th place and losing to Bede at Snapper?
So-so. It’s not a result but there wasn’t much I could have done in that heat against Bede once he lucked into the best wave of the day that came through. He literally got the best wave of the whole day. I tried to do everything I could to comeback, but sometimes you just need a bigger wave, and the score I needed - I think it was just a little out of reach due to the small surf conditions.
What is your take on Toledo? The man was on fire. Reckon he’s going to take over the world?
Yes he was surfing great. Those waves at Snapper were perfectly suited to his style of surfing, and being 60kgs I think it really helped. Hahaha.
The word is Toledo, Julian, Jordy and Medina are all going into Bells with strong approaches and a fair bit of hunger. Any comment?
Well, yeah, that’s pretty much a given. Why would we not? There is always everyone else though. You can’t take one heat lightly.
You have the capability to score 10’s at Bells. You pretty much did it last year on cue, despite not getting the score. Do you think your surfing is well suited to Bells?
I really like the wave. I like the feel and the push of a solid one. I feel it holds a big turn well, and so you can really push into it and put some power into it. The Bells wall allows you to open up a bit you know, get a few moves going, a few combos and some bigger carving type of moves. If there’s swell that is…
No use crying over spilt milk, which as mentioned is not something that you really do, but looking back how do you feel about that wave last year that didn’t score the 10?
Well, it was disappointing. I remember thinking, ‘what am I supposed to do?’ but that is the nature of it all. I asked the judges afterwards, and some said yes some said no. It really was a close call. I really would have liked to have gotten that score.

Even Kelly said about that wave that, “Jordy’s wave was one of the best waves I’ve ever seen ridden.”
Well …
Anything new in the equipment side for Bells this year?
Same board as last year ...
(That would be the 6’2 x 19 1/4 x 2 9/16 heavily modified Rookie he calls the Girabbit.)
Seems you’ve been scoring in Australia, in between heats that is. Where have you been getting good waves? How good was it?
Yeah, nothing exceptional, just super fun stuff and lots of time in the water. We got some waves on the Goldie immediately after the contest, and then I have been getting some fun little runners here in West Oz, doing a bit of board testing and keeping the momentum going.
What’s the best joke you’ve heard in Australia this year?
That there was going to be swell for Snapper…
