Wavescape is stoked to announce that Jack - now resident in Sydney, Australia - flies to South Africa this week as our special guest for the African premiere of his innovative feature documentary. Jack, maker of cult movies such as Tubular Swells and Green Iguana, will join us for the Wavescape open air screening that forms part of the Durban International Film Festival, presented by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Wavescape, supported by the Save Our Seas Foundation and BOS Iced Tea, are also planning a workshop with Jack next week on the technological advances afforded filmmaking through the use of wide angled HD cameras, unique water housings and the submarine cam that Jack helped pioneer in the film.

According to Spike, director of Wavescape, "We are honoured to have Jack accept our invitation, and to make himself available for not only the premiere, but also to share his knowledge with us at the workshop (to be announced). It's also fascinating to note that former Beatles singer Paul McCartney was stunned by some of the footage from the film, of the rhythmic flow gained by Jack's innovative use of submarine cameras that tracked beneath surfers as they rode curling, crystalline waves."

"The result was a successful collaboration and world-wide acclaim for a unique cinematic view of the connection between humans and nature in Paul's new music video Blue Sway, which we're also going to show in Durban.

“Now we also get to see the proper feature film that caused all the fuss,” said Spike, pointing out that non-surfers would revel in the fascinating narrative that depicts surfing’s deepest subconscious roots, from its role in ancient Hawaiian lore to the craft of surfboard building and “in man’s perpetual quest for a joyful relationship with the natural world”.

The scheduled opening films Leave a Message and Chasing the Swell are being screened again later in the week (at Musgrave). "We just couldn't resist this unique opportunity to honour this cinematic legend. In return, Jack will honour the spiritual significance of the Bay of Plenty with an addition to the programme still to be announced. With East Coast Radio and Wavescape introducing our guest, and giving away lank prizes, including 2,000 cans donated by liquid partner to Wavescape BOS iced tea, the evening promises to be a blast. Hope you can make it!"

The premiere of the feature documentary, a vivid celebration of the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha similar to the South African concept of Ubuntu, takes place beneath the stars at the beach where South Africa’s only world surfing champion Shaun Tomson cut his teeth in the late 1960s and early 70s.
