Hurley Heats Up
Sunday 5 October 2014 The heats for the 2014 Hurley SA Junior Champs have been posted as the country’s top juniors aged 17 and younger gear up for an almighty tussle at Lower Point, JBay, next week.

Heats, which are posted at www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za, start on Wednesday 8 October and end with the Finals in the six divisions on Sunday 12 October.
The event gets under way with the Opening Function in the Hurley Tent at the Point on Tuesday 7 October at 7pm.
Competing for coveted team and individual national titles, national team blazers and lucrative specialty awards, the event features the best surfers from the entire coastline who have qualified for their respective provincial teams via cutthroat selection trials.
“Junior surfing is the future of our sport in South Africa and the South African Junior Champs has to be the most exciting event of the year for any Junior surfer hoping to make their mark on the local scene,” says Hurley South Africa MD, Jevon Le Roux.
“We are proud to be associated with junior surfing and everyone is looking forward to an exciting event in Jeffreys Bay.”
Defending team champions Western Province will be determined to take the prestigious Freedom Cup home again after dethroning hosts Eastern Province at Jeffreys Bay last year. Meanwhile perennial top contenders KwaZulu-Natal Central along with Southern KZN, Border, Boland, Zululand, Southern Cape and the SA Development Academy Team will be going all out to clinch individual national titles and rack up team points.

“The Hurley SA Junior Championships is the most important junior tournament on the South African calendar and attracts the best young surfers from around the country to the best wave in the country,” says Robin de Kock, GM of Surfing South Africa (SSA). “This is where the future of South African surfing takes centre stage and we are extremely grateful and proud to be associated with Hurley whose support and commitment has seen the event become really special.”
Adding to the prestige of the coveted national titles at stake and securing their place in South African surfing history, surfers will also be competing for several special awards totalling more than R12 000. These include the Red Bull Best Air, Oakley Highest Heat Score, Island Tribe Best Tube, Skullcandy Team Spirit Award and two surfboards shaped by Matt Biolos from Mayhem.
As part of Surfing South Africa’s commitment to transformation, the South African Development Academy team is participating in the Hurley South African Junior Championships courtesy of a grant from Sport and Recreation South Africa.
All Aboard Travel ( www.all-aboard.co.za ) will be giving one lucky surfer a flight to join a photo-shoot surf trip with Zigzag Surf Mag ( www.zigzag.co.za ) that will see them featured in one of the magazine’s photo editorials.
