Fountain by the Sea
Wednesday 20 May 2020 Surfing's credbility has been boosted by guys like Matt Bromley, who has been helping Nigel Savel and his feeding scheme in Strandfontein. A short film. Visuals Alan van Gysen
South African surfers have been portrayed in a one-dimensional light during the COVID-19 pandemic. Not far from the waves they love to ride, surfers like big wave surfer Matt Bromley and Nigel Savel, founder of the The 9 Miles Project, are changing that perception. Savel's organisation - a surf-intervention programme based on the Cape Flats - was forced to close their youth programmes when lockdown came, so they switched to feeding the most vulnerable amongst the Strandfontetin community. They feed more than 1,000 people a day – including hundreds of children – and rely on continued support from donations to keep going. Watch this movie.
