Eye candy

Friday 11 July 2014 Day one of the JBay open went off with a perfect ten, a corrupt flip and a fair bit of eye candy on the competitor’s deck to keep Jodi Leza perfectly amused as Ian ran around snapping away. Here is the surf widows behind the scenes look at the first day of competition.

swd-1-art

Three awesome things happened today:

1. Gabriel Medina, the current world number one,  got lost on the way to the loos and decided to use our facilities instead, he then asked me how to open the front door while attempting to leave our spot, needless to say, nothing intelligible left my mouth.

2. Jordy Smith scored a perfect 10 AND a 9.8 on the first day! His epic performance had the packed crowd cheering, showing the whole tour how J Bay is really surfed.

The-Spartan

3. Michel Bourez 'The Spartan' and Kelly Slater wandered around the competitors deck ... shirtless. I've got photographic evidence ladies!

I can officially say my day was made then and there however, I haven't yet built up the courage to form sentences in their presence and ask them in depth questions because as much as they are just surfers, these dude are legends and I'm honestly a bit star struck. Tomorrow is another day.

We were all up bright and early at 7:00am for the 07:45am call time. Some big 4-6ft sets came through as I pushed my way into the crowd to get a better view of the action, the first heat was called.

Mick Fanning stole the show with two amazing barrel rides on one wave and of course subsequently won the heat, he moved into round three.

This was the day for pulling bold moves, Josh Kerr is known for his "radical" aerial antics and pulled off his signature 'corrupt flip' that had the spectators going wild. With Round 1 done and dusted and Round 2 half way through tomorrow's swell looks a bit smaller and we await word on whether ASP will run the event.

And finally, last night's press conference confirmed one important detail above all, J Bay is officially back on the world tour for good! That's all we needed to hear.
