The Eastern Cape Salsa

The event sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA) and sponsored by Cape St. Francis Resort, Tiletoria and Lafarge, drew over 200 competitors and their families. Truthfully, this is the the largest single gathering of surfing families in Africa.

With 7 days of good to excellent surf, this year's SA Champs proved to be a huge success. The first two days were held at the famous PE Longboarding wave, Cobbles, and then moved to Cape St Francis for the remainder of the contest, ending up with perfect waves at Seal Point on the final day. These conditions and the surfing talent amounted to incredible surfing with a couple of perfect 10's being posted.

Stand out world class performances in the Open Division came from Roxy Davis, Tarryn King, Justin Bing, and Thomas King – all of whom have competed on the highest level internationally. It was not only in the Open Division where the surfing excelled, but this year in particular, it was spread across all the divisions from the Under 14 boys, through to the over 60's Legends division. Special mention must go to Tristan Lev (Under 18 boys) who was on exceptional form.

This year, Tiletoria sponsored the first ever "Surfers Surfer Award" a floating trophy presented to the surfer for great sportsmanship, as voted by the surfers. Sam Christianson from KZN won this award for being a great ambassador for this sport, and for inspiring and encouraging others to embrace a passion for Longboarding.

Longboarding is proving to be a growing sport, especially amongst the Juniors, and Women, where the competition is fierce and the talent is growing. As a contest, the SA Longboard Champs is an event that brings together old friends for a reunion, a space for new friendships to form and an opportunity to surf incredible waves. The top 2 Open Ladies (Tarryn King and Roxy Davis) and top 2 Open Men (Justin Bing and Steven Sawyer) are now invited to the WSL Longboarding Championships, and the top 2 Open Men, the top Open Lady and the Top Under 18 Boy (Tristan Lev) get chosen to represent South Africa at the 2015 ISA World Games.
