CT hosts SA Champs
Friday 18 May 2012 In less than a week the 47th edition of the 2012 Billabong SA Surfing Champs gets underway on the Cape Peninsula, one of the most consistent but rugged surf destinations in South Africa.
The end of May is a good period for surf in the Western Cape, and the national championships - the longest running surfing tournament in the country - could enjoy anything from booming Outer Kom surf to Witsands perfection to the beachbreak barrels of Long Beach.
Billabong and Surfing South Africa are continuing their partnership with the most prestigious interprovincial surfing event in the country, by providing top class infrastructure and considerable prize-money amounts.
"We're stoked to be continuing our involvement with Surfing South Africa and the tradition that is the SA Champs," said Billabong South Africa's marketing manager Chad D'Arcy. "Cape Town is a great place for a mobile surf event this time of year, and we're looking forward to the wide variety of surf on offer."
As last year, the 2012 edition of the Billabong SA Champs will again focus on the premier divisions of Open Men's, Open Women's and U20 Boys and Girls. Defending Open Men's Champion Greg Emslie will be determined to retain his title, as will Nikita Robb in the Open Women's. There is guaranteed to be new champions in the U20 Boys and U20 Girls divisions this year as neither Sarah Baum or Nick Godfrey are competing.
The winner-take-all prize money breakdown is as follows:
Men : R10K
Women : R10K
U20 Boys : R5K
U20 Girls : R5K
Additional prize money will be up for grabs in the VZ Airshow (R1K), the DaKine Highest Heat Score (R1K) and the Kustom Kustomized Maneuver (R1K).
ZigZag will also be offering R2K for the Blowing Up Award.
In an increase from last year - all competitors will now be allocated 4A PST points.
