Bonus for Rocket Elf

Wednesday 21 March 2017 Silver-haired rocket elf Filipe Toledo gets a direct pass to Round 4 after Kelly Slater's injury as pumping Supertubes presided over elimination Round 2 of the Corona Open JBay yesterday.

Epic 4-6ft surf, with bigger sets, ran all day after a chilly devils wind start. The predicted devils wind - driven by freezing air coming off inland mountains topped with snow - lasted well into the morning before competition got underway at 10.30am.

Brazilian Toledo smashed his do-or-die heat against Kanoa Igarashi (USA) with an amazing 19.63 heat total including the first 10 after a long barrel and two big hacks.

Fortune continued to smile on him after the foot injury to 11-time WSL Champion and four-time event winner Kelly Slater (USA). Toledo was due to surf against the 45-year-old in Round 3 today, but Slater's misfortune is his gain, and he moves directly into Round 4.

Slater’s right foot folded under him when he wiped out in a tube free-surfing Boneyards, breaking three bones that will require surgery to insert pins. It appears he might be out of action for up to three months.

In another close heat, Leo Fioravanti (ITA) defeated Sebastian Zietz (Haw) in a closely fought encounter. Fioravanti will now face lone South African Jordy Smith in round 3. Rookie surfer Ezekiel Lau from Hawaii had a close heat with Brazilian goofy footer Wiggolly Dantes, with the powerful Hawaiian emerging victorious from the exchange after a few powerful barrels through the inside Carpark section.

When competition resumes, 2015 WSL Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) will take on Joan Duru (FRA) in Heat 1 of Round 3, which will be a repeat of the 2012 J-Bay final won by the Brazilian. Smith, the second seed, will surf against Fioravanti in Heat 7.

The forecasts are showing so much surf over the next few days that event organisers look spoiled for choice. Large surf has been called for today, and even larger surf for Thursday.

The Corona Open JBay is the flagship event of the JBay Winterfest, which also includes the JBay Windfarm MTB Classic, The JBay Loggers Classic, the Endurade JBay X Trail Run, The Oakley X Over, a Kite Festival, the Fishing Skins tournament, a Funduro and more. More details at www.jbaywinterfest.com

Event organisers are reconvening this morning at 7 am to assess conditions and make the next call.
