Boland Boosting

The event started off in contestable 2-3ft wedging rights, which picked up to 4ft launch pads by the afternoon, setting the mood for some entertaining finals.

The level of riding, throughout all divisions, was of international standard, which made for some close scores and exciting wave riding. Spectators were watching from the beach and cliffs, creating an amazing atmosphere, with the occasional Red Bull in hand.

All riders who made it to their respective finals were impressing the whole day with consistent riding, in tough competition. The standouts were Wilder Shultz (WP) with exceptional barrel riding, Kyle Cabano (Boland) with textbook air reverses, Tristan Roberts (Boland) with massive flips and Matthew Webster (NKZN) with big floaters on Dk.

It was good to see so many W.P riders entering the event and showing their support. The competitors were kept safe with the Gordonsbay NSRI, patrolling the water, and three shark spotters, keeping a watchful eye throughout the day.

In the Pro final Tristan Roberts, Mafoos Lombard, Aiden Wilson and Morne Laubscher had to battle it out for the Boland Pro Champion crown. Aiden and Morne had a good exchange of rides but Mafoos and Tristan were fighting it out like it was a world heavy weight boxing title.

Mafoos opened his account with a big full body invert, Tristan answered with a massive air extended flip followed by a clean roll on the end section. Mafoos was not letting this one go and did a banging air reverse off a big closeout section. Tristan waited patiently and took off on a perfect 4ft-wedging bomb and did a spectacular air reverse. Aiden Wilson was awarded 4th place, Morne Laubscher 3rd, Mafoos came in close second and Tristan finished with a near perfect score of 19 out of 20 and was crowned as the new Reef Boland Pro Champ for 2013!
