Unless you are a bodysurfer or bodyboarder, surfboards are heavy, unwieldly things that don't fit well in the confined cargo holds of airlines. That especially goes with the rise of the SUP and kiteboarding, let alone longboarding.

With the slow constriction of space pushed by the squeeze for more profits (bye bye leg room and hello deep-veined thrombosis), it was only a matter of time before surfboards were targeted.

You can't blame airlines. It's a bit of a mission lugging people's boards around. For the passenger, travelling with a quiver of surfboards on that exotic surf trip is also a hassle - from the cumbersome carry to the expense.

There are various hidden costs and fees that you should be aware of, and not all airlines are exactly up front about the fine print. You don't want to be in the unenviable position of coughing up more for the baggage fees than the plane ticket. It's happened before.

To provide a way to ease the burden on your wallet, LUEX Surf Travel experts audited every airline to any surf destination they could think of, and gave it to us.
