Bloodscan Series Ends
Sunday 14 August 2011 Grinding 4-6' waves repelled the cold and wet weather at the final event of the BloodScan Surf Series at Kitchen Windows in Jeffrey's Bay today. It was the fourth and last chance for the Eastern Cape’s finest U13 to U17 boys and girls to battle for top honours, reports Paul van Jaarsveld.

There were concerns that the surf was a little on the big side for a junior contest, but as soon as the groms entered the water it was clear that they were up for it.
The U15 Boys opened the day with Bruwellyn Kammies the first heat winner of the day, which set the bar for a high standard of surfing through the day’s competition.
“It’s amazing to see how far this series, and the standard of surfing in the Eastern Cape, have come in just a few short months,” says Lewis Khoury, Managing Director of BloodScan Africa and Europe, “we’ve also just launched the Bloodscan Jeffreys Bay center and having the finals of the BloodScan Surf Series hosted in Jeffreys Bay is just the icing on the cake.”
The Surf Series started in May at Kitchen Windows followed by two events in Port Elizabeth over June and July, ending with today’s final back in Jeffrey's Bay.
The U17 boys category has been fiercely competitive with BloodScan brand ambassador Steven Sawyer taking both Port Elizabeth event titles and Dylan Lightfoot winning the first event as well as the final event in Jeffreys Bay. The U17 girls category has been dominated by BloodScan brand ambassador Emma Smith and her sister, Gina Smith with a solid 1st and 2nd position in every event held to date.
“We’re incredibly pleased with the BloodScan Surf Series, and how it’s managed to elevate the standard of surfing in the Eastern Cape. It has provided a fantastic platform for junior surfers to hone their skills in competitive environments, and showcase their talent to the greater surfing community” says Lewis Khoury, “over the past few months we’ve fallen in love with the sport of surfing, and the host of lifestyle benefits it affords as an outdoors activity to both young and old.”
“We couldn’t have pulled this event off without the support of our Surfing South Africa, Eastern Province Surfing and the dedication of Laureen Payne. We’d like to make use of this opportunity to thank our sponsors Billabong, Kustom, Core, Country Feeling, Rvca, Xcel and Wavescape for making this BloodScan Surf Series an unprecedented success and for providing prizes and prize money for the contestants.” Says Lewis Khoury, “it would have been impossible to make this happen without them and we look forward to their continued participation and support in the years to come.”
After the competition concluded, Contest director Laureen Payne as well as Ettienne Venter, Heidi and Al Smith (From EP Surfing) did the number crunching to finalize the EP surf team which was announced on the spot.

The juniors were evidently stoked with the prizes that varied from anything from cartons of milkshake to surf wax and even xcel wetsuits as well as cash prizes.
“Eastern Province are thrilled to be a part of the Bloodscan Surf Series, it has definitely escalated the level of surfing and competition in the Eastern Cape”, says Johnny Bakker President of Eastern Province Surfing, “we would like to make use of this opportunity to Thank BloodScan for their support of Eastern Province surfing, and recognise them as an integral part of Eastern Province surfing’s growth and prosperity for the future”.
Bloodscan has indicated that they would like to continue to sponsor the EP Trials in 2012 and that there are also talks under way for at least two Nationall Open events in 2012.
