The surfboard, which will be auctioned at Jack Black's Taproom as part of the Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival this Wednesday 27 November in Cape Town, is inscribed with the 12 codes for life by Tomson based on his book The Surfers’ Code. The surfboard – made from recycled materials by Wawa Wooden Surfboards - is a replica of the board Tomson surfed when he won the world title in Hawaii in 1977.
A dramatic painting by Ngobeni, who is represented by the Everard Gallery, adorns the other side of the board – an interpretation of Tomson’s statement that the ocean connects us all. Blessing titled his hard-hitting artwork, laced with irony, “Democracy”.
The board, which is raising funds for the Sabrina Foundation for children with special needs, will be auctioned at Jack Black’s Taproom with 10 other boards adorned with the work of South African artists: Brett Murray, Karabo Poppy, Lionel Smit, Grace Cross, Heath Nash, Jake Aikman, Kate Arthur, Lucie de Moyencourt, and Michael Chandler.
Rock musician Arno Carstens, who has become an accomplished artist in his own right, has also joined in the fund-raising drive with a painted surfboard.
Tomson said: “Wishing you great success with the fundraiser. The Wavescape festival and the Sabrina Foundation are both doing amazing work.”
Today Blessing Ngobeni has established himself as one of the leading younger figures in contemporary South African art. He is represented by the Everard Read and CIRCA galleries in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London.
About Wavescape Art Board Project
The Wavescape Art Board Project has been raising awareness and funds for ocean-related charities since 2005. Each year, we invite artists to turn signature surfboards into works of art for an exhibition and special auction. The Cape Town leg of the Project has been hosted by various contemporary art galleries, cafes and studio spaces over the years.
In September 2012, the Project was launched in New York. The 2019 iteration takes place at Jack Black’s Tap Room, 10 Brigid Road, Diep River.
The main beneficiaries of the project are the NSRI, Shark Spotters, 9Miles Project, Adaptive Surfing South Africa, Ocean Pledge, the Sabrina Foundation, and the Beach Co-op.
