Apparently Milosky fell and was held down for two waves on a monster 30'+ swell at the renowned cold water spot at Half Moon Bay in California yesterday evening, according to a blog by Cyrus Saatsaz, owner of the San Francisco Surf Company who writes on the San Francisco Chronicle website.
Fletcher reportedly went looking for Milosky on a jetski, and found him 20 minutes later floating at the Pillar Point Harbor mouth, almost a mile away from the takeoff zone.
Rescue units unsuccessfully attempted CPR and he was taken to Seaton Coastside Medical Center in Half Moon Bay, where he was pronounced dead. After Mark Foo (1994), Milosky was the second surfer to die while surfing Maverick's. Milosky, 35, was originally from Kauai, Hawaii, but was living in California, is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
According to an interview with Mav's surfer Ryan Seelbach on Surfline.com, "Sion was surfing the place like he owned it, a full inspiration, sitting in a very aggressive spot and catching the ramp into the bowl. On this particular wave, he was right in the heart of the bowl. He made the drop, got to the bottom, did a bottom turn and the thing just mowed him over. There was no making it to the shoulder on that. I saw his board tombstoning and jumped off the ski.
Surfline said that "he set lasted four or five waves, and XXL winner Shawn Dollar went down hard on one, and attention shifted to rescuing him. No one in the lineup knew what had happened to Milosky until Nathan Fletcher made it back out on his ski after changing boards and couldn't see his friend. Fletcher started looking for Milosky in the lagoon, and eventually found his body near the mouth of the harbor -- over a mile away from the lineup. He raced to shore but it was too late."
