The Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival presented by VANS hosts a busy lineup of 15 cool events – with the screening of a record 30 surf and ocean films – at 10 venues around Cape Town and False Bay. Extra emphasis in 2019 has been placed on conservation awareness, ocean activism and community upliftment.

To underscore the increasingly urgent mandate to save our oceans, Wavescape will work with partners to host beach clean-ups, an ocean filmmaker's master class, oceanic panel discussions and talks, themed conservation evenings and film screenings.

We again hold an Oceans Alive evening at the Two Oceans Aquarium. This time, it's about ocean, activism and upliftment as we explore the unique ocean issues of Cape Town with the Sea Change Project, WildOceans, Sentinel Ocean Alliance and Gone. It'll include a panel chat, a short screening and some fund raising for Frank Solomon's Hout Bay youth programme.

Following the successful launch in Durban this year of the conservation flagship event Slide Night, the evening of short, punchy talks by ocean thought leaders returns to Cape Town to the prestigious Centre for the Book to immerse us in science, sustainability, aesthetics, adventure and activism. Slide Night takes place on Monday 2 December.

SHIVER ME TIMBERS! Look what's heading our way: White Rhino, a film about ... er ... small waves.

The festival opens with a special VANS night that includes live music (The Dinosaurs and Diamond Thug to play) and the African premiere of The Tony Alva Story - famous Dogtown legend - at Jack Black's Taproom on 9 November. This year, the festival runs for a full month, packed with events, including 10 days of film screenings, the exhibition of 11 surfboards for the Artboard Project at Jack Black's Taproom, with the Artboard charity auction set for Wednesday 27 November. We have an incredible lineup of artists, including a one-of-a-kind sustainably shaped surfboard by Wawa Wooden Surfboards inscribed and signed on one side by Shaun Tomson with his 12 surfing codes, and a decorative painting on the other by acclaimed SA artist Blessing Ngobeni.

Wavescape has announced the screening and premiere of several blockbuster surfing documentaries, including Trouble: The Lisa Andersen Story; Andy Irons: Kissed by God and the Bethany Hamilton film, Unstoppable. Wavescape will also add a two-day film festival outreach at Scarborough, showing films at the Camel Rock restaurant, before the famous outdoor screening at Clifton 4th Beach on Saturday November 30.

The festival moves to the Changing Oceans filmmaker masterclass with Wesgro, followed by themed film screenings and panel discussions at Two Oceans Aquarium and The Electric in District Six, followed by surfing films at the Labia Theatre from 5 to 8 December.

Films include How to Learn How to Surf, a hilarious spoof of surf culture. Amongst the South African films that will be screened, we include a short featuring Cape Town hero Mikey February called Nu Rhythmo, the Jason Hearn production Made in Africa that showcases our incredible coast, the Rick Wall film Sentinel Ocean Alliance, and the gritty short Street Surfers. There are a range of other great little shorts.

STAR STRUCK: The Wavescape screening at Clifton has become integral to Cape Town's summer.

What is an ocean festival without huge waves? Wavescape will present White Rhino, featuring gigantic waves in Hawaii, Tahiti, and Fiji. Nordurland is shot in the Arctic Circle, and will no doubt have even Cape Town surfers running for serious rubber.

The Andy Irons film tells the untold and tragic story of Andy Irons, who died after a painful life battling with bipolar disorder and opioid addiction. Paige is the unheralded story of big wave surfing hero Paige Alms. We're also proud to have scored the rights to Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, the inspiring story of a young girl who becomes one of the best surfers in the world, despite losing her left arm to a tiger shark.

Of the 30 films we're bringing to Cape Town, exactly a third are made in or by South Africans, and we're stoked to be able to assist local filmmakers with our annual filmmaker's masterclass. This year we again partner with Wesgro. The theme is Changing Oceans: making conservation documentaries. It will be held at the InvestSA One Stop Shop on Wednesday 4 December.

About the Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival

Takes place in Cape Town between 9 November and 9 December 2019 with favourites the Artboard Project, Clifton Beach Screening, Slide Night, Film Festival and Filmmakers’ Master Class. The 2019 iteration includes activations, events, talks and beach cleanups with Ocean Pledge and the Beach Co-op. All proceeds from our charity events (spearheaded by the Artboard Project) go to ocean beneficiaries NSRI, Shark Spotters, 9Miles Project, Ocean Pledge, Beach Co-op, South African Adaptive Surfing and Sentinel Ocean Alliance. Last year’s art auction raised R782,000. The Festival headline partner is Vans. Supporting partners are Wesgro, Jack Black Beer, Petco, Long Beach Capital, York, CLiP, and Gone.
