Four women are through to the quarter finals after winning their non-elimination Round 3 heats, thus skipping Round 4. They are Tyler Wright (AUS), Carissa Moore (HAW), Courtney Conloque (USA) and Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW).

Earlier in the day, eight year veteran Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) suffered her first Round 2 knockout loss in 60 CT events, falling to injury replacement Bronte Macaulay (AUS) - a huge upset.

Southern Cape hero Bianca Buitendag survived her knockout heat in Round 2, winning against Laura Enever (AUS) by 11.87 to 11.50 total heat score. She came second in her Round 3 heat, where three competitors go for broke to earn the right to skip the elimination Round 4 and advance directly into the Quarterfinals. She got a second, and must now surf against her good friend Johanna Defay of France in Round 4.

When the event is called on again, probably tomorrow morning, Round 4 sees Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) taking on Nikki van Dijk (AUS), Malia Manuel (HAW) vs Bronte Macaulay (AUS) and Sage Erickson (USA) vs Keely Andrew (AUS), with the Buitendag and Defay tussle taking place in the fourth heat.

Earlier today, Heat 1 of Round 3 saw Tyler Wright (AUS) lay down the highest two-wave score with 17.24, defeating Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) by only 0.94 points with Bronte Macaulay (AUS) finishing 3rd.

All three athletes in Heat 2 started strong, but reigning three time World Champion Carissa Moore (HAW) separated herself with two 8-point-rides. Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) fought hard to combat Moore with risky maneuvers, but Moore’s power surfing reigned supreme, with Malia Manuel (HAW) 3rd.

Athletes in Heat 3 pulled out all the stops but Courtney Conlogue (USA) pulled off a major win in the last 30 seconds with a huge layback hack. Sage Erickson (USA) and Johanne Defay (FRA) must surf Rd 4.

The final heat of the day was full of nail-biting action, as all three girls fought to the very end to advance directly to the quarterfinals. Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), and Keely Andrew (AUS) battled wave for wave. Weston-Webb edged out Buitendag by 0.54 points.

Surfline, official forecasters for the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast, are calling for: Rippable E/ESE tradeswell will continue for the final day of the event waiting period, edging up a bit more from Thursday. More info at www.worldsurfleague.com
