Small, contestable surf provided the ideal conditions for the Tag Team format used in a tournament that saw 130 competitors of all ages representing schools from as far afield as Cape Agulhas. After the successful 2019 Surf League programme run by the Surf Emporium during the year, the Interschool Championships brought the school surf contest season to a fitting conclusion.

The format of the event was teams of five surfers each surfing in a relay format over a set period of time. The youngest competitor was five-year-old Sydney Daniels of the Zoetendal Akademie in Cape Agulhas. Zoetendal Akademie, who entered two teams, and surfers from Bredasdorp Junior and Senior Schools took four hours to get to Muizenberg, spent nine hours at the contest and then took four hours to get back home - the Bredasdorp seniors will wear their silver medals from the Plate Final with pride.

There were also teams from Capricorn Park, Masiphumele, girls' teams from St Cyprians and Herschel, teams from Melkbosstrand and Somerset West, and strong teams from Reddam Constantia and Reddam Atlantic, Camps Bay, Llandudno, Generations Noordhoek, Westerford and Ambleside.

The Senior Cup Final gold medal went to Reddam Atlantic with Capricorn High taking silver. Melkbosstand Fellowship High took third and an all-girls team from St Cyprians were fourth. Plate honours to Westerford with Bredasdorp 2nd ahead of Somerset College and Masiphumele.

Each participant received a commemorative Sea Harvest T Shirt, a Zigzag magazine and a certificate of participation and floating trophies were awarded to the winners. Finalists won medals, the Cup winners earned a team prize of R1,000 each and the members of the winning teams as well as the runners up won a gift pack from Hurricane.

The Sea Harvest Western Cape Interschool’s Championships was presented by the Surf Emporium and supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation SA and the Roxy Davis Foundation. Results and scores at www.liveheats.com/surfingsouthafrica
