Wavescape - Surfing in South Africa

Fri, 9 June 2017

The wild storm that hit the Peninsula on Wednesday has left a solid 4-5' swell for the Tiger’s Milk Winter Classic, which gets under way this morning in at Muizenberg Corner.

The popular multi discipline surf contest takes place in front of the Tiger’s Milk Bar and Restaurant at Muizenberg Corner, which hosts the Surfers Circle Walk of Fame that was inaugurated earlier this year. The surf has dropped from the wild 6-8 foot storm swell along the Muizenberg coastline yesterday. The swell will continue to ease into the weekend, with rain expected tomorrow.

The early rounds of the World Surf League Longboard Division for Men and Women, round one in the Over 40 Longboard group and the first two rounds of the Men’s surfing division will be held today. The other divisions will surf tomorrow and the final rounds and nine individual Finals will be held on Sunday.

Finalists will share just on R50,000 in prize money and will also win prizes from Mami Wata, the support sponsor for the event. These prizes will include clothing, tshirts and caps and the winner of the grand prize of a special Mami Wata longboard shaped by Hugh Thompson will be announced at the award Ceremony in Tigers Milk on Sunday afternoon.

A Tag Team format which will see groups of five boys and girls surfing together as teams will be used to determine the top four teams. In this way organisers ensure that every participant plays a role in the project which is geared towards giving surfers from disadvantaged communities the opportunity to participate in a team focussed surfing contest.

Each participant will receive a commemorative Tigers Milk T shirt, a goodie bag as well as refreshments and meals which will be provided by Tiger’s Milk. The Tigers Milk Outreach project will be held at Surfers Corner from 10am to 1pm on Sunday.

The Tiger’s Milk Winter Classic is supported by Mami Wata in partnership with Wavescape.

Located in the heart of the Cape Town Surf scene, Tiger’s Milk brings both a heightened sense of excitement and delicious food to Surfer’s Corner in Muizenberg. Serving generous portions of all your favourite food with a panoramic view of the bay is a hard combination to beat. Through the expansion of the brand to six stores, Tiger’s Milk has held on to the ethos that their customers have fallen in love with: mouth-watering food enjoyed in a festive environment. It is Tiger’s Milk's love for surfing led them to host the Tiger’s Milk Surf Classic in 2015, the Tiger’s Milk Winter Classic in 2016 and now the third edition of the event in 2017. Their aim in sponsoring this surf contest is simple; to promote surfing as a sport in South Africa and provide accessibility to emerging surfers. www.tigersmilk.co.za
