Wavescape - Surfing in South Africa

Sat, 10 June 2017

The storm aftermath brought lots of white water to paddle through on Day One of the Tiger’s Milk Winter Classic yesterday, but Cape Town's top longboarders took it in their ... er ... stride.

In the speciality longboard event presented by the World Surf League, former Tigers Milk winner and two time ISA World Champion Matthew Moir, Cape St Francis visitor Michael Hill, local campaigner Tao Farren Hefer and former Tigers Milk Varsity Division champion Norman Lotz all walked their first round heats (sorry), and moved straight to round three.

Defending Champion Alfonso Peters nosed into to Round Two (sorry) because he came second in the first round.

Defending Champion Kay Holt, 2015 Tigers Milk champion Simone Robb, Krystal Tavernor and Angela Craemer all won their first round WSL Women’s Longboard heats while Andre Schmidt, Toby Murphy, David Amato and Mike Blignaut all advanced to Round two in the Over 40 Longboard Division.

Local surfers Ben de Castro and Simpiwe Tokkoms, Luke Parr and Rudi Breuninger won their second round heats in the Men’s surfing division.

The contest continues today and ends with all finals running on Sunday. Finalists share R50,000 in prize money and prizes from Mami Wata including clothing, t-shirts and caps, and grand prize of a crafted longboard shaped by Hugh Thompson. These will be announced at the award ceremony in Tigers Milk on Sunday afternoon. See results here.

Each participant will receive a commemorative Tigers Milk T shirt, a goodie bag as well as refreshments and meals which will be provided by Tiger’s Milk. The Tigers Milk Outreach project will be held at Surfers Corner from 10am to 1pm on Sunday.

The Tiger’s Milk Winter Classic is supported by Mami Wata in partnership with Wavescape.
