A Port Alfred surfer bitten on both feet by what they say was a Zambezi shark, is in stable condition in hospital.

A report by Dave Macgregor of the Daily Dispatch says that Brendonn Denton, 35, was hit by the shark, estimated at two metres, during a surf session off the pier at East Beach, at the mouth of the Kowie River.

Denton was bitten just before 10am in water conditions described as “cold, dirty and with extremely poor visibility.”

Macgregor reported that "Benton apparently kicked the shark after an intial bite, but the fish attacked a second time, biting into Benton’s surf board and cutting through his rubber leash, attached to his leg. The injured surfer then paddled back to shore where he he was dragged from the water by friends and loaded onto a bakkie".

Apparently doctors at Port Alfred Hospital were discussing whether to operate on his feet because of injured tendons, according to Macgregor's report.

Zambezi, or Bull, sharks are common along the east coast of Africa, particularly around dirty river mouths. They have been found hundreds of kilometres up rivers, and are freshwater tolerant.

Ja bru, Sloth is one lucky chap. Spoke to him after he got out of theatre and he was all smiles and jokes. He is so amped to get back in the water it is scary.

Us brahs are so stoked that he got off so lightly. I guess Kowie - on a river mouth, near a massive reef - has always been a shark attack waiting to happen, but it is super scary when it does happen. Anyway, life goes on...about six guys scooped it cooking yesterday arvo - a day after the shark attack.
