Wavescape - Surfing in South Africa

Fri, 13 April 2018

A cranking swell is heading for East London where more than 100 of South Africa's top open and junior surfers are surfing in the Mitchum Buffalo City Surf Pro presented by Reef Wetsuits.

Stop #3 of 13 on the WSL Africa Tour and #2 of five events in the City Surf Series (CSS) takes place at Nahoon Reef from today until Sunday. Nahoon Reef, which is near East London, is an open ocean right hander over reef, with hollow sections and walling sections that can provide long rides and the perfect contest platform.

If the swell is too big, the contest will probably move to the Corner, but tomorrow's swell does not look out of control, despite the predicted 20 second period. It does, however, look moderate sideshore southerly with a bit of SE pushing. Looks a solid six foot, with a mild to moderate chance of 8-10ft sets. Sunday sees good waves in light lumpy SE onshores.

The event comprises Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 rated events for Men and Women and Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) 1,000 rated events for Men and Women aged 18-and-younger. A handful of overseas campaigners will join the pack of South Africans.

Heats consist of four surfers with the top two advancing to the next round with four remaining to contest the final in each division. The QS1,000 men’s sees the last four compete in two man-on-man semifinals and a man-on-man final. The finals in the Women’s and Junior Women’s will run tomorrow. The Men and Junior Men’s champions will be crowned on Sunday.

The men’s, women’s and junior men’s and women’s events are sanctioned by the WSL Africa regional office. Each competitor earns points for their final position in the event and those points count towards the crowning of the annual WSL Africa champions. The points earned in the men’s and women’s events also count towards the international QS rankings, which are used to determine which surfers qualify for and receive preferential seeding in high priority WSL events worldwide.

The points earned in junior men’s and women’s events count towards the selection of the four men and two women who represent the WSL Africa region at the annual WSL World Junior Championship in Australia every January. All surfing events in South Africa are sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the national controlling body for the sport.

There is R80,000 in prize money, divided thus: QS1,000 Men: R30,000; QS1,000 Women: R20,000; JQS1,000 Men: R20,000; and JQS1,000 Women: R10,000.
