Toledo-QuiksilverPro-GoldCoast-620-th

The best surfers in the world have been working hard in the off season if their surfing is a gauge in the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, which finished today in 4-5' Snapper Rocks.

The first stop of the 2016 World Surf League (WSL) Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour (CT) season got underway early this morning, ZA time, with Men's Round 1.

Jordy Smith started fair to middling, but clever surfing by Wiggolly Dantas means Jordy will have to surf in Round 2. He was a bit unlucky.

Filipe Toledo, from Brazil and defending champion at Snapper, advanced directly to Round 3 after winning his heat. The same could be said for countryman Gabriel Medina, as well as Mick Fanning, Michael Bourez and Matt Wilkinson.

The last heat of Round 1 had no shortage of excitement with the battle between Australian veteran Joel Parkinson, rookie compatriot Jack Freestone (AUS), and Hawaiian John John Florence (HAW). The early high scores challenged each surfer to push their performance throughout the heat. Florence and Freestone put up a solid two-wave score, but it was not enough to beat the local CT veteran’s 8.60 opening ride.

“I definitely had a little bit of local knowledge,” Parkinson said. “I felt Jack was pretty tense in that heat. The first time on the big league and the big stage really does play a role in your head, but I was really impressed with how much he relaxed. I know in my first ever CT heat I was so much more nervous than probably he was.”

Surfline are calling for a steady windswell/swell to produce rideable and even fun surf for the first days of the waiting period with a bump in size set for Sunday/Monday. A steep angled, short period SSE windswell mixes in late next week.

A call will be made tomorrow morning for the women’s Round 1 heats. The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast will be webcast LIVE at www.worldsurfleague.com.
