Seal Point: Western Province dethroned hosts Eastern Province at the St Francis Resort SA Longboard Championships by Oxbow in classic conditions here at the weekend.

Province - spearheaded by Matt Moir in the open and masters; Simone Robb in the ladies; and Jonathan Paarman in the super veterans divisions - amassed 519,712 points as opposed to EP's 483,080, who matched Province for wins - Margot Saunders (Senior Ladies), Craig Cuff (Grand Masters), Greg Smith (Veterans) and Mush Hide (Legends), but fell short elsewhere on the podium.

While both teams scored four wins to scoop eight out of 12 divisions (each win scoring 1,000 points regardless of age group), it was the sheer weight of backup results - lots of podium finishes and repro positions - that enabled Province to push past the hosts.

KwaZulu-Natal, third with 455,648, were not far behind. Scott Lefevre (Juniors) and Craig Daniels (Seniors) scooped first places, with more presence in other positions than Southern Cape fourth (430,632) who also got two wins - Daniel Buitendag (Boys) and Faye Zoetmulder (Girls).

Total surfing hours were close to 60 and heats ran from 26 April to 1 May 2010.  Entire surfing families took part, with 200 contestants, and 12 age groups. The oldest surfer was reported to be 68 while the youngest was 12.

On the Monday before the event began, rugby legends AJ Venter, Percy Montgomery, Garth Wright, Warren Brosnihan, Andy Marinos and Rob Louw showed their mettle in the surf, entertaining a huge crowd and making headlines around the country. In the evening, a fund-raising function featuring Bok coach Peter de Villiers was held at the Cape St Francis Resort.

The weather conditions held for most of the week. With the surf sometimes on the heavy side, a couple of boards were broken and there were a few stitches here and there due to rock cuts or bad wipe-outs.

Conditions got better and better towards the last day and the finals were completed in glassy 3ft conditions with a light offshore after which all the contestants and their families gathered at the Resort´s restaurant and conference facility for the prize giving and awards ceremony.
