Wavescape - Surfing in South Africa
SA-Longboard-Champ-1200-th

Mon, 30 April 2018

Mixed ocean conditions brought out the best in many of South Africa's top longboarders across 13 divisions in the GB Surf SA Longboard Championships at Lamberts Bay this weekend.

The finals day yesterday dawned with fun surf with three foot peaks giving the surfers more than enough canvas to draw their graceful old school lines, interspersed with a few lip smacks and new school hacks.

Notable results were Michael Hill's win in the Masters, and a runners-up in the Men's Open, which was won by perennial threat Steve Steezy Sawyer. Steezy put together a near-perfect 19,70 in the men's open to squeeze out Hill, who notched up a 19.28 in his Masters final win.

The women's event was won by an in-form Faye Zoetmulder, who has rediscovered her surfing mojo after not being part of the SA Champs for seven years. The Gilmoure family had a good day out, with Grant taking the Grandmasters, while daughter Christy took the U18 girls.

On land, history was also made in the battle to stop plastic pollution. Thanks to a partnership between NGO Ocean’s Pledge and eco retailer Faithful-to-Nature, there were no plastic straws, coffee cup lids, bottles or cutlery, among other things, like polystyrene cups.

Ocean Pledge’s Blue Event project aimed to eliminate single-use plastic from the Champs by providing guidelines for organisers and working closely with vendors. Plastic water bottles were a thing of the past, with Faithful-To-Nature making sure judges and contestants got metal water bottle.

Ocean Pledge also partnered with the Save Our Seas Foundation to provide an educational workshop to a local surfing outreach program.
