Matthew McGillivray is killing it in Spain where he eliminated Aussie Jack Robinson to make the quarter-finals of the QS10,000 ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro yesterday.

The surf continued in 3-4ft surf and side-onshore winds on the sixth day of action at the beachbreak of Pantin. McGillivray led the Saffa charge, which consisted of Mikey February, Beyrick de Vries, Jake Elkington, Dylan Lightfoot and Aden Masencamp.

In a star-studded field riddled with Championship Tour surfers keen to bank some points, McGillivray was the lone South African after De Vries fell in Round 3.

Matthew McGillivray took his Round 4 heat against Brazilians Alex Ribeiro and Marcos Correa, and his Round 5 man-on-man heat was an ironic win over Robinson, who had comfortably beaten McGillivray into second place during their four-man Round 3 heat.

The young South African from JBay exuded match temperament and style. Lets hope he can go all the way today (call will be made today 1pm European time, noon ZA time). Elkington fell in Round 1, while Lightfoot, Masencamp and February fell in Round 2.

The quarter finals comprise Jadson Andre vs Matt Banting; Jake Marshall vs Caleb Tancred; McGillivray vs Morgan Cibilic; and Miguel Pupo vs Nomme Mignot.

The women's event was won by Amuro Tsuzuki (Japan), who beat Bronte Macaulay (Aus), Chelsea Tuach (Barbados) and Macy Callaghan (Aus) in the final. There were no South Africans in the event.
