The winner of the Hurley Photo Contest is Peter Russell for his amazing photograph taken in False Bay Wednesday 24 June during the storm in Cape Town last week. Peter wins a product pack from Hurley to the value of R5,000!

A close runner (very close!) was DC Mike for his brilliant shot of the storm taken along the Sea Point promenade (he used his water housing to get right up to the storm weather).

This was a horrible decision to make, extremely tight at the end. Peter Russell pipped it at the post with three votes to two, with one other judge not selecting either as his first choice.

However, more judges placed DC Mike's shot second than they did Peter's shot, by a vote of four to two! That's how close it was.

After intense deliberation, it was decided in favour of Peter. This was due to two main reasons:

1 Three judges selected Peter's as the top shot. Two judges selected DC Mike's at the top shot.
2 Peter's image enscapsulated two elements, the mood of the storm AND a surfers' perspective (vision) of a wave. DC Mike's shot, while beautiful and moody, was a pure representation of the storm.

However, it was so close, with one judge calling for a tie, that we have decided to find a consolation prize for DC Mike, which includes tickets to the Wavescapes Surf Film Festival this year.

Spike, Ross Frylinck, Chris Mason, Pierre Marqua, Alan van Gysen, Glen Thompson
